Chris Cannon served as a member of the United States House of Representatives representing Utah’s third Congressional district from 1997 to 2009. Not really much of a politician, he only ran for Congress because, after the radical shift of Congress to Republican control in 1995 it was apparent that the Republicans would lose seats in the 1996 elections, and, with arguably the most conservative district in the country represented by Bill Orton, a Democrat, and after an exhaustive search of leading citizens who would not run against an entrenched incumbent, and a little polling, he felt he could win.
He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah October 20, 1950 and attended Brigham Young University (BYU) as well as the J. Reuben Clark Law School at BYU. From 1980 until 1996 he was a lawyer, business owner, and venture capitalist. He worked as an intern in the Supreme Court in 1974 and his first job was as an economist in the Department of Agriculture in the summers of 1974 and 1975. Other jobs included: work as a Teamster in a grocery warehouse as an undergraduate; a Reagan political appointee as Associate Solicitor in the United States Department of the Interior (from 1983 to 1987); and a stint in the Department of Commerce Office of Productivity, Technology and Innovation (1987). He then organized the company that purchased and restarted the Geneva Steel works in Utah County in 1987.
